Walnut consumption may lower depression risk, says study

Walnut consumption may prevent the prevalence of depression and increase the level of concentration, revealed a recent study conducted on an adult population from America. It was found that the incidence of depression was 26 percent lower for people who consumed walnuts and eight percent lower for people who consumed other nuts, compared to those who did not consume any types of nuts. The study was carried out by the scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and features in the journal Nutrients.

Compared to other nuts, walnut consumption was found to be associated with heightened energy levels and improved concentration. According to lead investigator Lenore Arab from UCLA, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out every six adults will be afflicted with depression at some point of time during their life. It is thus critical to come up with economical interventions like diet modifications which are easier to execute and may benefit in reducing the prevalence of depressive symptoms.

Walnut consumers likely to have better outcomes

The study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a large sampling of the U.S. population. Over 26,000 adults from America were surveyed about their diet intake over the last one to two days as well as prevalence of depressive symptoms over the past 14 days. The participants were asked to rank the frequency of episodes of feeling tired or having less energy, low interest in doing things, disturbed sleeping patterns, and difficulty in concentrating.

The findings suggested that the people consuming walnuts had a lower amount of hopelessness, greater energy levels, higher interest in activities, improved optimism and enhanced concentration. Arab shared that previously, walnuts had been examined for their contribution in cognitive and cardiovascular health. But now with their association with improved depressive symptoms, it becomes important to incorporate them in a healthy diet regimen. On an average, walnut consumers, ate 24 grams or one-quarter cup serving of walnuts every day.

Even though the link between depression scores and nut consumption appeared to be consistent for both the genders, the effect was felt to be strongest for women who, in comparison to men, were more likely to report greater depressive symptoms and heightened use of antidepressants. In comparison to other tree nuts, walnuts were found to have a distinctive fatty acid profile. They mostly had polyunsaturated fats with high amounts of plant-based omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (2.5g/28 grams), the highest amongst all the nuts.
